So we went down to the faithful old pawn shop where I bought my blue clarinet for $15 to see what my options were. They had what appears to be a tenor sax (It might be an alto, not quite sure) a clarinet (I already own 2, mark that off the list), some flutes, 2 trombones, and a $700 baritone. Both the baritone and the sax are out of my price range, so that leaves my options to flute and trombone. I don’t think I’m ready to add ‘low brass player’ to my resume, so I think I’m going to focus on a $60 flute in decent condition.

Which leads to my next item of business. Coming up with the money. I blew most of what I had on comic books and the rest is set aside for a certain promise I made to a friend this summer (you’ll hear more about it in late June or early July)

My Mom is a casual couponer and she enjoys watching the crazy people on the TLC show Extreme Couponing. So we got to talking about it, and how she would save more if she didn’t work so much, and how bored I was. And so we came to an agreement- I will cut and organize a bunch of coupons and do a bunch of math to calculate savings and stuff and she’ll give me 25% of the money she saves! I have nothing better to do. It kind of sounds fun. Now I just have to talk her into paying me for babysitting my brother every day for 5-8 hours. I do it for free at the moment. I’m glad I kind of paid attention in math!

I’ve got to finish Eragon in 13 days or less to have it done before MDA camp. If my math is...

I’ve got to finish Eragon in 13 days or less to have it done before MDA camp. If my math is correct that’s only 54 pages a day. Not too bad. I need to put down the comic books, I suppose. I also forgot that I signed up for two months of Camp NaNoWriMo. I need to pump out a 50,000 word novel in the month of June, and then I need to turn around and do it all over again in July. And I have real camp in June, which is a computer free zone. It looks like I’m back to the old fashioned pen and paper method.

Book rant!

Sooo I’ve been thinking about going on a book rant about this certain title, Out of My Mind, for quite a while now. I’ve refrained. This book gets slammed a lot. A LOT. From both sides of the fence. I’m somewhere in the middle. Let me explain:

12 year old Melody Brooks is an average girl. Average is probably the wrong word to use, though. She has a disease called cerebral palsy. Her mind? It works just fine. Her mouth, muscles, body? Noodles. She has no control over them whatsoever. She’s in a power chair and uses a machine, a MediTalker, to communicate. She can’t show how smart she is no matter how hard she tries. She’s written off as retarted (I hate that word, I’ve been called it, I don’t appreciate it, don’t use it.). Eventually, she’s allowed to join in on some regular classes with the ‘regular children’.
When Melody finds out about an academic competition, she decides to try out. The teacher holding try outs gives some pretty insane questions. While other students in the class get notably high scores, she gets every single question right. Their reactions? Horrible. The teacher says “If Melody Brooks can get them all right, we all should be able to!” Which outrages her, making her want to quit the team. She doesn’t.

They go on to win the state competition, qualifying them for nationals! They get to fly all the way to Washington DC! Oh, but the flight gets changed. One of the girls on the team is put in charge of calling to tell Melody’s Mom, but she doesn’t. The team is to afraid that Melody will embarrass them, so they decided as a group that they wouldn’t call her. The team goes on to nationals and gets absolutely pummeled without her.

Okay, I was wrapped up in this book. I cried. Every page. Every little action. I freaking understand. I understand not being able to do completely normal things. Not being able to just get up and walk across the room… Yup, I get it.

After reading multiple reviews on this book, I’ve decided that this world is a really messed up place. As if I didn’t already know. People say that this book is cruel and unrealistic, taking a slam at the US education system. I tell you what- I’ve been there, this book isn’t cruel, I’ve been in worse situations involving a teacher’s aid with a near broken nose because of me.

Yes, I’m in a wheelchair. People target me. I was lucky enough that she was willing to take a hit for me. (The kid went unpunished, by the way.)

Teachers have treated me like that. The first time I went to take a history test at a new school the teacher came up to me, cleared his voice, and loudly said: “GEORGANA? WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO READ YOUR TEST TO YOU?” See? It does happen. I rejected his offer and got 105% on the test, thank you.

And the kids? Yup.. I’ve made plenty of quality friends. Then, I walk into a room. They crumble like tin foil. In fifth grade I lost my best friend of four years because my legs looked funny. At least she was honest.

And I’ve had people leave me on field trips. Just a couple of week ago it happened for the second time. The second time.

I suppose I’m lucky though. I can walk and talk and do most normal things. But this is one book that you have to read. You must. It’s got so much emotion on every page. You’ll never truly understand it, but this book might help a little. I’m not really sure how to explain it.

Tumblr

Hi! MINTY IS ON TUMBLR! (Warrior forums= Mintwing the One and Only, Twitter= @cheesestarr, blogspot= MintyTOAO, Figment= Georgana N., Babydow=jan51999) I still don’t quite understand what Tumblr is but I assume it’s somewhat like blogspot, which I still use.(http://mintytoaostuff.blogspot.com/ [Book reviews!]) So I know like no one on here. I signed up in hopes of running into a decent warrior cats roleplay group. (THOSE THINGS ARE EVERYWHERE.) So uh yeah. I know I have a really creepy internet stalker *COUGHSPOTTEDPEBBLECOUGHCOUGH*

So reading wise I’m drowning myself in some comic books and Eragon. I’m hoping to finish it sometime before summer camp in two weeks. Or else I’ll take the book with me, and then somebody will take it and throw it at something/someone. It works the same every year. Even at school. On the last day of school my book was tossed away four different times and I still didn’t win the always reading award. The guy who did reads graphic novels under his desk. I mean, I do the same thing too, I just don’t get caught as much as he does… Still, any time I go to parties at this one friend’s house, I get stopped at the door so the parental units can pat me down for books. Seriously.

And so I saw the Avengers recently, sparking some insane interest in comic books. I went out and bought all the Avengers comics that I could, and I’ve been living inside them ever since. I’ve seen lots of topics about DC vs Marvel, and having read a bunch of Marvel and only one DC I’m undecided. But I read a Green Lantern comic (DC) and it’s been my favorite, so I guess I’m leaning more towards DC at the moment even though I am completely uneducated.

I still don’t know who my favorite superhero is. In the comics, I like Green Lantern and Hawkeye, but Iron Man has to be my favorite movie-wise. I’m actually watching the first movie right now. I’ve been watching it a lot, which is driving my family nuts because it’s a Netflix movie and they all really want to see We Bought A Zoo.

And I know it’s late, but happy geek pride day! Today was also the release date of Star Wars however many years ago that was. I haven’t seen that movie either, but I played the Lego game on PS2 and DS and the same person who took me to Avengers and got me started on comic books is going to fix that too.
